A Message from Executive Director Judy Burns

As any new parent knows, daily life changes completely when the baby arrives. A hot shower, a home-cooked meal, clean clothes, or a few hours of uninterrupted sleep start to sound very luxurious to those responsible for a newborn. Add the stress and uncertainty of a new baby with a critical illness and “luxuries” are the last things on parents' minds.

Both of the families featured in this month's report were expecting a celebration of their new arrival. They didn't care if they were blessed with a boy or girl; they just wanted a healthy child. The shock of bad news hits hard at a time when families are expecting a joyous birth with no complications. One family lives more than two hours away from the life-saving care their daughter needed at the hospital. The second family lives less than an hour away; but with a sick infant and feedings every two hours, they could not make it home and back to the hospital. Both families found a bit of normalcy and strength from making the Ronald McDonald House their home away from home.

Thankfully, most of us only have to imagine a major illness, surgery, or life-long complications for our children. It's the ability to open our hearts to someone who's going through something unimaginable that makes our families so thankful. A recent guest from Blountstown, FL, put her appreciation this way, “We have faced some horrific things, but because you have love in your hearts, it has kept us together as a family.”
